Free play in Vancouver...

This is a short one... on Granville Island there is this really cool unfenced children's play area:

It is loud here on a hot day like the one when we stumbled on it! Good loud :-). Lots of people were just hanging round watching, with and without kids of their own. And we watched for a while too but despite being very hot ourselves, decided we were really too big to join in (dang!) and too hot to just watch!

So we moved on to markets, donuts, drinks, shops and ferries - you know: big people stuff (!).

What struck me as we moved on was just around that corner there is another playground - one I am much more familiar with. Fenced in to keep children in and unwanted others out, kids were playing here too. Quietly. Less of them to be sure. But there are limited things to do on this kind of structure, aren't there? Where is the creativity, the fun??

I think maybe we ALL need more free play spaces...
